Don’t Tell Me to Be Happy!
The Purpose of Our Life is to be Happy. ~Dalai Lama
Thatโs one of the biggest, fattest lies in our society today. Donโt buy it my friends.
Our purpose is to love God and to love others. Sometimes thatโs not such a happy thing to do if you know what I mean. Hello, anyone ever tried to love someone unlovable? Geesh.
Hereโs the deal with happiness: we donโt know what makes us happy.
When my son was beginning to earn money for the work he did around the house, he saved around $60. Impressive for a seven year old! He wanted some sort of a video game and thatโs all he talked about for weeks, if not months. Best game ever. Had to have it or he would explode. My husband tried to tell him he wouldnโt like it. It was too difficult for his age level. Did our son listen? No. He knew this game would make him happy.
Our son spent all his money on this particular game, came home, smile on his face and played. Within an hour he came to us crying about the difficulty of the game and wondered if we could perhaps take a quick trip back to town to find another game more suitable.
Thatโs a no go. My arms were crossed and my mouth turned down. No need to say I told you so.
You see, the Bible says that thereโs a way that seems right to man, but in the end it leads to death (Proverbs 14:12). We think we know what we want. We think we know what makes us happy and we chase it without abandon or concern to the casualties of choices. Our relationships, finances, careers, and legacy often fall victim. Our society throws it all away and more in pursuit of happiness. Tragic.
Doesnโt God want us to be happy?
Pause.
My first novel, The Wounded Warriorโs Wife, tackles this issues of personal happiness. Whitleigh Cromwell is a young Army wife whose husband, Collier, is deployed to Iraq after spending a year in Korea. There is much fear and turmoil inside as Whitleigh does life alone, delivers and cares for their child, and waits for her husband who may never return. When he does return, Collier isnโt the same. War has depleted his faith and left an angry shell of a man.
Her circumstance isnโt fair. Itโs desperately sad. Whitleigh wants to be happy. She has every right to be happy, so she believes, but at the expense of her marriage?
Yes, God loves us. Heโs our Daddy who wants to pour out all sorts of blessings into our lives, thatโs true, but, He has a different definition of happiness than we do.
Why? Because Heโs God. He can see the panoramic, 3D picture of our lives instead of the Instagram-sized photo we see of our lives. He knows what will makes us happy so understand me when I say: God cares more about our obedience to him than our happiness.
Gasp. Yes I just said that.
Donโt pass out on me.
Think about it for a moment. Let it sink in. God cares more about our obedience to Him than our happiness. Why? Because He knows that itโs not really even happiness that weโre looking for. Shocker, right? Happiness is fleeting and ever changing. No weโre not looking for happiness. Weโre looking for peace. That peace that passes all understanding (Philippians 4:7). Where do we find that peace?
You got it babe, in HIM!
Isnโt our God clever? I love it!
When we find ourselves longing for happiness, letโs wrap ourselves in some Prince of Peace. Better yet, letโs just stay wrapped up in Him by spending time in Godโs Word (The Bible) on a daily basis.
Wounded Warrior’s Wife
Battles Raging Within Are The Ones You Must Fight To Win
WHITLEIGH CROMWELL dreamt of a happily ever after with her newlywed soldier husband. COLLIER CROMWELL loved God, his wife, and his country, though military life exacted a demanding toll.
An unexpected deployment during the height of war sends Collier away for yet another year. Their lives tumble down a path marked with struggle, and fatalities. Burdened with unseen emotional wounds and crippled faith, Collier’s homecoming only increases their trials.
The angry, defeated hermit at Whitleigh’s side barely resembles the loving, faithful hero she married two years earlier. Concerned about possible career repercussions, admitting his need for help proves difficult for Collier and his behavior worsens.
Angry outbursts โ and his cold, callous nature โ isn’t all that provokes Whitleigh to pack her bags. Collier seeks solace for his private suffering in the worst possible place leaving Whitleigh to walk away from shattered pieces of broken trust.
Will Collier seek the healing he desperately needs in time to save their marriage, or is it over? Are there wounds too deep, marriages too broken, and lives so far gone they fall beyond even God’s ability to restore?
