Having read all of the Sisters of the Heart Series by Ann Shorey, this is by far my favorite. I loved the rest of them, but Cassie, the main character in this novel, is awesome. She was born of noble circumstances and taught by her mother that ladies don’t do any real work. But now that circumstances have changed and her mother and her live off the charity of relatives and friends, she’s tired of feeling useless. She puts her fear aside and steps out of her comfort zone to get a job to support them working at a restaurant. When her controlling mother objects, she must walk a tightrope of honoring her mother and making her own way. Jacob, the restaurant owner, is a kind man with a past he regrets and wants to stay hidden. He lives in fear that people will turn away if they know the mistakes he’s made. There are some other wonderful and colorful characters in this novel as well. It will keep you turning the pages. I read it in one day.
