Lauren Bacall was the second movie star to die last week. Her sultry voice and natural talent made her one of my favorites. Here are a few of my favorite movies with Lauren Bacall.

5. The Shootist (1976)

Director: Don Siegel

Starring: John Wayne, Lauren Bacall, Ron Howard

In this made for TV movie, Bacall is a feisty widow trying to help a dying gunfighter while working to make sure her son doesn’t idolize him. I love the scene where she goes toe to toe with Wayne. This was John Wayne’s last movie before he died.

4. Dark Passage (1947)

Starring: Humphrey Bogart, Lauren Bacall, Bruce Bennett, and Agnes Morehead

Bogart is a fugitive trying to prove his innocence. But he has one advantage helping him that Richard Kimbell never had – Irene Jansen played by Lauren Bacall.

A Phillip Marlow private eye film with Bogart and Bacall. What more can I say.

In this movie, gangsters invade a hotel during a hurricane. There is a lot of suspense and tension showing what it takes to be a good man when confronted with evil.

1. To Have or Have Not (1944)

Starring: Humphrey Bogart, Lauren Bacall, Walter Brennan

This not only is my favorite Lauren Bacall movies, it’s also my favorite Humphrey Bogart movie. The couple sizzles in this thriller set in World War II. The movie was made before they were a couple, and the attraction between them jumps off the screen.

This is the movie where Bacall says the famous line to Bogart, “You know you don’t have to act with me, Steve. You don’t have to say anything, and you don’t have to do anything. Not a thing. Oh, maybe just whistle. You know how to whistle, don’t you, Steve? You just put your lips together and… blow.”
