My Review: ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥
I’ve enjoyed every novella in the Civil War Anthology, Cry of Freedom. Return to Shirley Plantation was the first in the series and is coming out in paperback. The author, Carrie Fancett Pagels, has done a wonderful job researching a real plantation in Virginia that became a hospital for the Union Army. Matthew Scott is conflicted. He was forced to fight for the Confederate army because his father is a Copperhead, but he’s from Ohio and sympathizes with the North. When he’s wounded he ends up at Shirley Plantation where he meets Angelina. Angelina is mostly white but is a freed slave who stays to help her family that is still enslaved. I won’t give up any secrets, but this is more than a romance. There’s a mystery involved and a great plot twist at the end. I highly recommend this novel.
