Ten of My Favorite Writing Quotes

by Carole Brown

I collect quotes, so it’s a fun and easy post today! Enjoy and share a favorite quote of your own!

In no certain order, I give you my comments and the quotes:

  • Sounds about right!                                                                                                           “Amateurs sit and wait for inspiration, the rest of us just get up and go to work.” – Stephen King
  • Oh, the agony! 🙂                                                                                                                     “There is nothing to writing. All you do is sit down at a typewriter and bleed.” — attributed  to Earnest Hemingway
  • Totally understood.                                                                                                        “Finished is better than perfect.” —Michael MacMahon
  • The wonder to experience.                                                                                                      “We write to taste life twice, in the moment and in retrospect.” ― Anaïs Nin
  • Something all writers have to learn.                                                                                      “A journey of a thousand miles must begin with a single step” — Lao Tzu, ancient Chinese philosopher
  • So totally love this one!                                                                                                          “You never have to change anything you got up in the middle of the night to write.” ― Saul Bellow
  • And, amen to this one!                                                                                                                    “If I waited till I felt like writing, I’d never write at all.” —Anne Tyler
  • Make it real, make it feelable!                                                                                                   “No tears in the writer, no tears in the reader. No surprise in the writer, no surprise in the reader.” ― Robert Frost
  • Oh, my!                                                                                                                                         “The difference between the almost right word and the right word is really a large matter. ’tis the difference between the lightning bug and the lightning.”
    Mark Twain
  • And last, since I’m a mystery/suspense author, a new favorite of mine:      “Murder your darlings” — attributed to Sir Arthur Quiller-Couch

And, YOUR favorite?

  1. Thanks so much. I too collect quotes – thanks, I will add these to my favorites. One of my favorites is: “Murder your darlings” — attributed to Sir Arthur Quiller-Couch; We gain strength, and courage, and confidence by each experience in which we really stop to look fear in the face… we must do that which we think we cannot.
